Things YOu Should Know!!!
Dance tips:

  • Practice, practice, practice
  • Practice your moves on each side of your body
  • Practice you moves Slow, Medium & Fast
  • Start moves on flat feet & then on your toes
  • Practice to Middle Eastern Music & try other styles
  • Practice your smile
  • Most important:  Remember your basic dance posture!
The art of Middle Eastern Dance is not mastered in 1 or 2
sessions!  You will have to practice to become familiar with the
basic movements.  It is mostly muscle memory.   It depends upon
you how fast you learn, it could take months or even a year.  The
more you practice the better you will become.

If you are currently attending classes and feel you are not
advancing fast enough, consider taking an additional class and
or private lessons.  Everyone learns at a different pace.
Be patient it does take time to master this art form.

Once you are a student of Middle Eastern Dance you will NEVER
stop learning.  There are seminars, workshops, and haflas to
attend; if you so desire.

Experience more than one style of dance, be sure to learn your
Classical Egyptian this is your foundation!  Other avenues of
gaining knowledge are videos, DVD's, communication with other
dancers, surfing the web and taking classes with a different
instructor.

Good Luck on your journey into the Ancient Art!
If you are planning on continuing your dance journey there are supplies that
you will need to have packed in your Raks Sharki Bag for  class.
Keep your bag pack & ready to go.
It's a good idea to have a dance journal, especially at seminars & or
workshops
A basic
hipscarf , a veil and a pair of zills will be your beginning supplies.

Your hipscarf can be coined or fringed.  Hipscarfs come in a variety of
shapes, rectangle, square and triangle.

The
veil is normally 2 & 1/2 to 3 yards of fabric and no more than 45
inches wide. If you are shorter than 5'4" try the shorter length, for taller
dancers go with 3 yards and above.  Veils come in various fabrics, chiffon is
fine but a silk flows best.  Working with a heavier veil builds upper
body/arms strength. You will have no problem when using your lighter
weight veil.
* You can make your first veil!  Selection of the fabric is the key, something
lightweight and sheer.  Hem the edges or sew on trims, beading works fine,
but will be time consuming. Your veil shape can be rectangular or half circle.

Zills come in small, medium & large sizes. Smaller zills have a very light
sound, medium sounds medium and the larger zills are loud!  Eventually
you will decide on which sound you like the best.
